Link Earning while being Penalty-safe in 2015

Link earning is still one of the most effective ways of attaining supremacy with Google search rankings. Together with other beneficial activities like driving user engagement, using high quality content, and on-site optimizations, I have found that quality links make a large difference with Google. While Google considers links to be a major factor while ranking websites, their policies also show that they discourage active link-building efforts. I have seen Google dish out penalties for paid links, directory submissions and article marketing.

The system of penalties has been slowly but gradually put in place to encourage the mindset of earning links, and not building them through inorganic processes. By implementing these penalties, Google has set up a system of penalizing link building and reward link earning. One problem that I have faced with this system is that for websites with no initial audience, link earning might become a difficult proposition.

Let us take a closer look at some of the important points that Google make in their Webmaster Guidelines –

  • Buying or selling links is discouraged.

  • Mutually beneficial link quid pro quo is discouraged.

  • Flooding of guest-posting campaigns with keyword-rich text links is discouraged.

  • Automated link-generation programs are discouraged.

These are just some of the interesting caveats that I have found to be of importance as far as Google is concerned. For the year 2015, these are my tips to earn links without attracting Google penalties –

  • Using the Right Tools – Putting together the right tools for the job is important to start off with. I use Google Chrome as my browser of choice, along with the SEO Quake, Moz and Majestic Backlink Analyzer extensions. I have also found great value in the collaborative project management tool Podio, which I use to create, manage and distribute content.

  • Developing Content – Link earning is all about developing compelling content that would make people want to link to your site. I try to analyze trending and engaging topics and niches using tools like Buzzsumo to find out more about creating content that addresses particular problems, answers particular questions and provides value. I also try to diversify my content with the use of multiple media, infographics and videos. This is also the right time to figure out your link naming strategy.

  • Preparation of Reaching Out – I then reach out to sites that have similar content. I use Google to find the relevant websites, and keep track of the search keywords with a utility like Trello. This is followed by the collection of contact details and the drafting of my individual, tailor-made pitch for those places that I decide to target.

  • Getting in Touch – I use Gmail with the Streak Chrome extension to send out my pitches. I also categorize my emails and responses into separate areas for easier retrieval.

  • Responding – Once you start getting responses (I get both actual replies and autoresponders) it is time to start categorizing them and responding to each one individually. The idea is to start building a relationship and develop insight about each prospect, and use that insight to drive conversation.

  • Final Steps – The moment you receive positive feedback, it is time to start creating and distributing your content. Make sure to include friendly reminders about publishing your content.

I have always found that earning links is hard work, but the results can be extremely rewarding in terms of Google rankings. Do write in with your comments on your perspective on link earning.
